Hello,
My name is Joshua, from Melbourne Australia, and I specialise in the advanced form of remedial massage called Myotherapy.
A hands-on discipline focused on assessing movement and tension, and on relieving musculoskeletal pain and improving how the body works. The aim is to restore and maintain the normal integrity of the soft tissues. (Nervous tissue, epithelial tissue, muscle tissue and connective tissue)
With a main focus on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, I use a range of hands-on techniques to restore glide where the layers of tissue have stopped sliding over one another, to wake up the body’s own sense of itself, and to work on the cause of the pain rather than the place it is felt.
Working with the nervous system, rather than around it, is what makes change
possible. It improves how clearly the body reports its own position, and that
leads to more accurate, less effortful movement. What changes in the fluid
between the tissue layers lasts hours to days. What lasts longer is decided by
how you move in the weeks that follow.
Every person is different, a particular combination of physiology, history and
state of mind, so there is no single remedy that suits everyone. The work starts
by reading what is actually in front of me, and deciding what this body, today,
needs.
I think about this through the old Chinese idea of Yin and Yang, opposing but
connected forces running through everything, the body included. I use it as a way
of thinking about opposites and proportion in a person, not as a state I claim to
correct.
Most kinds of massage aim to relax the body and mind. Myotherapy goes further: it
reconnects sensation and movement so function can return, letting you move again
after an injury with thoughtless, fearless movement.
What hands-on work reliably changes is how tissue feels to move, and how clearly
the body reports where it is. Animal studies also show an anti-inflammatory
response in connective tissue after manual treatment.
To be in harmony with oneself is to live long and sustainable from our own energy/ breath.
Like an ocean current shaping our planet, how we breathe also affects our internal structures and mechanisms.
For these reasons, I have dedicated my research and practice to assist in the prevention, discovery and recovery from pain and looking forward to helping you.
